Passage
“Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning… but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” — 1 Peter 3:3-4
Reflection
The beauty standard that dominates every screen changes every season, and it never stops excluding someone. Measuring yourself against it means measuring yourself against a target that moves on purpose, designed so no one ever fully reaches it.
1 Peter 3 doesn’t say caring for your appearance is wrong. It says where your essential worth doesn’t lie. It speaks of an ornament that doesn’t fade, one that neither age nor an algorithm can touch, because it depends on neither.
Isaiah 61 goes even further: it promises the garment of praise instead of the spirit of heaviness, the oil of joy instead of mourning. That’s not a promise about your face. It’s a promise about what your heart carries, and about how that, over time, also ends up showing from the outside.
There’s a beauty that fades with the years, and no one can stop it. And there’s one God describes as imperishable, precisely because it depends on nothing time can wear down.
Prayer
Lord, I’m tired of measuring myself against a standard that changes every season. Help me seek the ornament that doesn’t fade, the one born from a heart at peace with you, not the one that depends on a mirror or a screen. Thank you that my worth never depended on that. Amen.
