Passage
“You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” — Deuteronomy 6:6-7
Reflection
Deuteronomy 6 doesn’t describe a formal class or a scripted lesson. It describes something much simpler: talking about God while sitting at home, walking, before bed, when getting up. In the ordinary moments of the day, not in some special event that needs to be organized.
Many families put off their devotional moment waiting for the “perfect” day: when everyone’s in a good mood, when there’s plenty of time, when they have the ideal lesson ready. That day almost never comes, and meanwhile, years pass on the simplest opportunity of all: sitting down for a while, all together, even if it’s just five minutes.
What this passage asks for isn’t perfection. It’s repetition. A little bit today, and again tomorrow, and again the day after. Small consistency builds something no big, sporadic event ever can: the sense, for children, that faith isn’t a special topic, but a normal part of everyday life.
Prayer
Lord, help us as a family not to wait for the perfect moment to seek you together. Give us the consistency to use the ordinary moments, sitting at home or walking, to talk about you. Let our children see faith as a normal part of life, not as a separate event. Amen.
